Some Things are Best Left to the Pros
January 18, 2019

HGTV, Pinterest, your friend, neighbor, or Uncle Bob are great sources for ideas for home renovation and DIY projects. Many homeowners think they can do a “small job” like hanging sheetrock over paneling, tiling a floor, or putting in a new window. While it may LOOK easy on YouTube, HGTV, or other sources, some projects are not as easy to actually complete as they appear. Here at Clean Slate Properties, we do not do a lot of the work ourselves. We hire professional contractors. Why? Because the end product will often be completed more quickly and at better quality with good contractors.
We often see what we affectionately call “Harry Homeowner Work” – which is work a well-intended homeowner did themselves. It is easy to identify when you see poor quality, incorrect materials, or the work was never completed. There are many projects that can be completed by homeowners and can save hundreds or thousands of dollars (my wife and I have completed many of these projects over the years). Keep in mind what your skill level is, what the physical demands will be, the time you have to “squeeze in that project” (and then double the time estimate), and how much materials will cost (and then double that to account for mistakes and do-overs). If you still want to move forward – go for it! In the meantime, don’t take our word for it, clink the link below to find out what one survey says are projects that many homeowners regret they ever tried to do themselves.
